Get to know us
We work in healthcare. We work with people who have trouble communicating and who have trouble eating and drinking. In our line of work, we’ve seen so many people have their decision about what to eat and drink, and how they eat and drink taken away from them… people lost time with their families and friends, quality of life, etc.
We are seeing these trends/problems in all settings. When we ask: Who decided they needed pureed food? Who decided they shouldn’t eat or drink and need a feeding tube? - The responses is always someone on their healthcare team made this decision (a speech therapist, nurse, or doctor) - NOT themselves. When we ask if they were educated on the benefits, risks and alternatives, the answer is always no.
For this reason, we started I-CHEWS to help people understand their rights when it comes to their healthcare. People have been seeing this problem across all different areas of healthcare, and because of that, there has been a shift from doctor directed care, to patient or person centered care. Person-centered care is based around your needs and your doctor is listening to what matters most to you.
